Give to Others
If I am only for myself, then what am I? -- Hillel
When you’re ill, it’s easy to get dragged down by what one mother called “gratitude fatigue.” Another mother with metastatic disease says, “There is always something you can do, no matter how ill you are.”
It feels good to give to others or to use your skills and abilities in whatever way you can.
For example, mothers we know bake cookies on their good days; volunteer in their children’s schools; knit hats for other cancer patients while sitting in treatment waiting rooms; offer emotional support to another parent with cancer. Many mothers record their stories, not only for their children, but to share their hard-won wisdom with other parents in need.
